Artist Statement
I paint evocative, contemplative images using traditional watercolor medium in a contemporary, spontaneous style and an unexpected scale.
I seek to connect the ageless human instinct to make images with our current moment in time. I explore gestures and visual elements that occur in artwork throughout ages and cultures. I employ the watercolor medium, steeped in a long rich history, presented with a contemporary hand. I often push the image over individual panels challenging the convention of a rectangle and hinting to ancient cave art.
My paintings are often developed as a series and presented in installation groupings unique for the exhibit space. In recent work I’ve mounted larger format paper on 1 ½ “ deep cradle wood panels 16” - 22” tall. The image often expands over multiple panels, typically 2, 3, or 6 panels each 8” - 12” wide. Installed groupings are typically 20” – 80” wide. Another recent watercolor series employing marks reminiscent of petroglyphs includes nearly 20 images on paper framed to 13” x 17” x 1”. This series is grouped uniquely for each installation, typically 48” to 86” in each direction.
Viewers often comment on the contemplative beauty, spontaneity and mystery of the artwork.
“I thought I knew watercolor paintings”. “Beautiful”
